Unearthed secrets become the growing topics of daily discussions. As with a lot of small towns, everybody knows everybody else's business. With Upper Room Chapel being the heartbeat of the town and its residents, the role of the church, religion and community are all important parts of the book. Set in Southern California, the small-town community in The Mothers is as much a character in the novel as the ones I have already mentioned. They are not perfect people, they are impulsive, selfish, loving, and misunderstood - they are human. It leads to a companionship that is sweet but tested as the years go by. Their relationship gives them a sense of belonging and helps fill the maternalistic void each one has felt.
Before their friendship, both seemed lost and unaware of their place in their small town. Nadia and Aubrey, polar opposites of each other, become unlikely best friends sharing in common the loss of their mothers. Each one has suffered a loss in some way that, accompanied by the choices from their past, affect them through to adulthood. By focusing on the concept of motherhood and womanhood, Bennett explores the inherent boundaries and pressures that come with both terms.Īt the beginning of the novel, we’re introduced to the teen lives of Nadia, Luke and Aubrey. What’s most notable about this book is how the narrative effortlessly takes on these subjects in a way that leaves a lingering impression, as well as creating three-dimensional characters who are flawed yet endearing. Instead, it charges fearlessly in, presenting you with relationships and decisions which are real, life-altering and complicated. Brit Bennett’s debut novel is a story that does not shy away from difficult topics.
